Because www.freecreditreport.com is not really "free". Yes they will give you a free credit report but only if you subscribe to their credit monitoring service. What you want is:

www.annualcreditreport.com

See this link for details: http://www.massconsumers.org/Press-Release/Phone4freecreditreport.htm

THERE IS AN OLD SAYING, Nothing in life is free, and there ain't no such thing as a free lunch! My grandson was playing a video game and a pop-up came on and said he'd won $1000( in travel dollars) I called and after the free vacation in 2 places in Fla and a free cruise they wanted my credit card # They said they were affiliated with Disney World in Fla and when I mentioned I new the Head of Disney operations they said call him without hanging up or the offer would expire. I said if ya gave nothing to hide then give me a couple of days to contact him(Labor Day weekend) They then put on a high pressure salesman to get my card# and I hung up on them Guess what my grandson got back on the Internet game and they flashed the same message again. They told me if I hung up I'd lose the offer. BULLSH-----

When they say is no such a thing as a free lunch
that goes for everything. Learn that nobody gives nothing for nothing, anyone asking you for a credit card # without you purchasing or ordering something is nothing but a big scam

Because it is a service that will charge you for but the initial credit report is free--------------DO NOT GIVE your Credit Card unless you've read all the fine print and agree to the terms--very little is actually free, always a catch. Be Wary for it is in your favor to be very careful/ The free credit report site actually wants to monitor your credit, were someone to use your card or use your name to set up acct as in idenity theft they will monitor and inform you-you can set up and monitor your credit history online. It is a legit service but each credit card will do the same for a small monthly fee-probably less but just like they say the initial credit report is free but you do not want monthly automatic charges on any cfredit card unless you first check them out and you really want the service

Alot of companies do that. Sometime it is a scam to get your credit card number.
Other time it may be for a FREE 10 to 30 days of use.
With your credit card number they started taking the money that they charge per month.Because when you type in your card number...then you just gave them permission to access your account!
SOME IMPORTANT ADVICE:
NEVER GIVE ANYONE YOUR BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER ON LINE:
ESPECIALLY IF SOMETHING SAYS FREE .

Many places use a credit card for verification purposes. However, freecreditreport.com enrols you in triple advantage, which I believe is free for the first month, but then it automatically re-bills, so you must cancel it right away.

Credit card info is usually to pay for shipping or to become a member of a club that sends you something monthly.

When you forget to cancel before the end of the free period, your card will be charged for the next year's (or at least month's) service. Once charged they will point out the fine print that says it is non-refundable.

Because they are going to sign you up for a service that costs about $85 per month and will break your bank account. Don't do it!

you want http://www.annualcreditreport.com

the others ask, because they want you to sign up for something that you don't realize you are signing up for.

otherwise there is no reason for a credit card
