Nyctophobia (from Greek νυξ - "night" and phobia, also called scotophobia, from σκότοσ - "darkness", lygophobia, from lyge - "twilight", or achluophobia or noctiphobia) is a pathological fear of the dark. Its symptoms include breathlessness, excessive sweating, nausea, dry mouth, feeling sick, shaking, heart palpitations, inability to speak or think clearly or sensation of detachment from reality. Normally, since humans are not nocturnal by nature, humans are usually a bit more cautious or alert than in the day, since the dark is a vastly different environment. Nyctophobia produces symptoms beyond the normal instinctive parameters.
Sufferers have an abnormal and persistent dread of the dark and experience anxiety even though they may rationally understand that the dark does not pose such a great threat. Treatment options are typical for any of specific phobias.
Nyctophobia is most often associated with children.
well to sumarize people, like me after a scary movie, are afraid of the dark because they can't see whats in front of them and our mind plays with us a little then just prefer to turn on all the lights to make sure nothing is after them.

Most people are afraid of the dark because they fear what they can't see. Did you ever try walking around without your eyes open, its pretty hard. In the dark you can't see where your going and its kind of like watching a scary movie...u know how you get that feeling that something bad is going to happen, but u just don't know when its going to come. Its like the same thing

The only thing about the dark that scares me is that I might fall over something I can't see. I am far more likely to meet an axe murderer on a brightly lit day than I am in the dark as presumably he wants to be able to see too.

I was afraid of the dark as a child, and I remember having to walk home from a party in the dark. It was only a 5 minute walk, but I wanted my Dad to come a collect me. I told him that I was scared, and he told me this:
"There's no need to be frightened, there's nothing in the dark that isn't there in the day."
This would of eased my fears, if he hadn't said under his breath as he walked away.
"But all the nasty things are asleep during the day!"

Way back in prehistoric times, there were predators lurking in the dark. People who had a healthy fear of the dark were less likely to get attacked and possibly killed. Accordingly, natural selection favored people who were wary of the dark.
This is why little kids also have such fear of the monsters in the closet and under the bed. Such fears used to keep kids from wandering out and getting themselves killed.

Heck yeah I am scared of the dark. I hate it. I dont know what might be lurking around my room or house, lol. I have little accent lights that I always leave on around my living room and hallways. I sleep with the TV on (muted) and I have to have the fan going to drown out any little sounds I may hear in the night.

It would get real hard to rest if we did not have darkness. but in the winter I would leave a bright light on at night somehow it helps me to sleep better. usually only a small light so I can see if I get up. Things can happen in the day as well as the night.

The only time I am afraid of the dark is when I have watched a really scarey movie. I let my imagination run away with itself. Most generally it comes back though.
