it seems like they are trying to out do me. When I put something new up they do also but times two. Should I take on their challenge and go over the top or let them win?

Try just taking it as a quiet compliment. They wouldn't bother trying to out-do crap decorations, they must think you have a nice looking set up with yours.

TP their house. Just Kidding. Instead of trying to out do them try to do something really original. Every year, about the week before Halloween, my 4 brothers and I unveil our pumpkins. We have a friendly sibling competition to see who can come up with the coolest looking pumpkin/jackolantern set up. My brother Eric won last year. He had two pumpkins, one on the top step of the porch and one right below it. The top one was carved to look like it was throwing up on the lower one with pumpkin guts and seeds spewing onto the top of the other. The lower pumpkin had an"oh no" kind of face. It was really funny and he got a lot of compliments on it.

I do what ever I want to do with my decorating or anything to do with my house and let the neighbours do their thing.
I never think of it as a competition or who is going to win.
Don't play that game. It's immature.

I had that happen one Christmas when I had an apartment with a balcony. They ended up winning, though, because I didn't have the funds for it. : )
I wouldn't let them bother you though. Your yard will look fun and inviting, while theirs will end up looking like PeeWee's house on his big adventure movie.
Let your own monetary and storage capacities be your guide. : )
