A cancerous tumor would be the only reason for radiation. They would remove what they could through surgery and radiate the area afterwards to be sure they got all the cells.

There is a disease called Graves Disease that attacks your thyroid and your eye muscles and makes the thyroid pump out way more hormones than it should. This can affect your other organs and if left untreated long enough will kill you. The only way to stop the thyroid from doing this is to burn it back or kill it with radiation treatments.

Radiation is sometimes used to kill off the thyroid if it is overactive
then the patient would take thyroid supplements daily to have normal thyroid hormone.

my mom just had that... she had hyper-active thyroid. she had the radiation done to kill off part or all (not sure) of it. it was producing too much of whatever thyroids do and it was making her hot all the time, loosing weight, and other side effects. now that she's healing from the radiation therapy, she's feeling much better.

Hyper active thyroid, they stop it from over producing and then you take thyroid supplements in the right levels. Or cancer.
