Indulgences were actually sold prior to the Reformation and were partially a cause of the Reformation. Catholic authorities reacted by declaring Protestantism a heresy, but unfortunately for them, England and the northern part of Germany, as well as Scandinavia became Protestant, so ignored the Pope's law. Obviously there wasn't much the Church could do, but they were rather enfuriated by it. It is also known as "the Great Schism."

which one, Protestant Reformation? anything other than catholic was seen as wrong.

authorities were losing people in the church, so the catholic clergy (people who worked in the church) started selling indulgences (basically they said that if you gave them money, they would ensure you made it to heaven through prayers, and you would be forgiven for your sins)... these indulgences were sold in order to win back people who wanted to convert to protestantism
