I thought it would spark a nice debate so i wanted to ask the opinon of other people.

Absolutely Not!

Tests were required once upon a time in the Deep South along with Poll Taxes. These were all part of Jim Crow Laws in the South.

The Voting Rights Act passed in the 1960's did away with disenfranchising tactics like these.

And besides, who exactly would determine the IQ level needed to pass the "test", not to mention the questions on the "test"? Conservatives? Liberals? Moderates?

I agree with Ah-ha who says that all you should need is just a voter ID.

It doesn't matter! That is so damn unconstitutional, and has been ruled that way many times, and Republicans could not pass it!

The Voting Rights Act precludes it, and it was often used as a way to PRECLUDE people from voting. It violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth amendment and in many cases, it violates the fifteenth Amendment.

It brings up to very important points. While the last thing I want is a completely uneducated voter going out and playing bingo on the ballot, someone being denied the right to vote is almost as bad. Even if someone shares no political views as I do, or HAVE no political views, they still have the right to vote. Its in the Constitution and no amount of stupidity, naivity, apathy or any other typical American voter quality can change it.

We don't really need many more systems for keeping foolish masses away from controlling the government. We already have the electoral college and other ways of doing things in congress and the judicial branch to prevent that.

First of all, you'll have to repeal the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prohibits literacy tests.

no we shouldnt have to take a test before voting because some of us arent very good at takeing them. so i dont think that would be very fair. we should all have a right to vote even if you did take that test.

It would be nice to get information on people who vote, before they vote... Just to see what's up. You know what I mean.

But it would cause all sorts of problems, so... let everyone vote, but start trying this out as an experiment. Good question.
