I'll tell you right now, it is an HP all in one. That is why it doesn't work the way it is supposed to operate. Every single one of these suck. Get rid of it and take the loss. I'm telling you. I've owned too many of them and every single one of them was broken. They either never fully worked, or they'd work for a month then s**t on me, or something. Whatever, not one of them was worth a s**t. Check out the military video regarding HP's all in one printer. They'll tell you the same thing. The worst of it is HP won't honor their s**t. If they would fix them, or make ones that work, then maybe HP would be worthy, but they don't. They'll fix it all right (or replace it) but you have to pay for that. HP's all in ones do not last, if they work at all. Remember: every single one of my HP all in ones did not work right, they didn't last, or not all of their functions worked. Get rid of it. Their regular printers are great, but not their all in ones. I got a Canon PIXMA MP450. Although the ink is costly, they work. HP all in one: did you check in their color section of the printer (in the maintenance or under print... The scanner has boxes to check for color, magazine color, black and white, grayscale. Scanning with color and scanning with grayscale or B&W. Have you located those areas and made sure the proper box was checked?

I had the same problem then I switched to a Canon Pixma. For now go to their website http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=support and put in the model of your printer and they will give you a list of troubleshooting solutions.
