Wayne Gretzky. He isn't called "The Great One" for no reason. All-time leading points scorer 2857...greatest goal scorer 894...most assists 1963... by far... he's still the all-time points leader minus his goals. Mark Messier, the second all-time scorer, has 1887 points.

Best ever? Best offensive player? Best defensive? Best goalie? Best leader? Gretzky, Howe, Richard, Lemieux, Dionne, Perrault, Bossy, Yzerman, Messier, Belliveau. A person can make a case for any of these. And a couple dozen more without any trouble. I read the response about how the game has changed so how can we compare Nels Stewart scoring 44 goals in 22 games back before expansion with Gretzky's 96. Comparing Orr's 2 scoring titles to Doug Harveys Stanley Cups, etc. You get my drift. Personally I'm a Gretzky fan but I watched Orr from a rookie. Gretz never had the knee problems Orr had since Junior hockey and because Orr changed the way defensemen are looked at, I have to go with Orr. Like comparing apples and oranges.

There have been many great hockey players over the years, like Gretzky, Howe, Orr, Lemeuix and others but, if you look at the Record book, WG is listed the most of course and Howe coming second. However, when Howe played the game was different and you can't compare a defenseman and a forward and a goalie to judge the best hockey player because the jobs are different. Orr certainly made the offensive defense, and Gretxky just blew everyone away and so did Howe. Lemeuix did too, but because of his cancer he did not have the time to fufill out as many points as the likes of Gretzky or Howe, but do we count him out? NO! You also have to take into consideration season length, technology of the gear, and how the leagues were formulated. When Howe played, there were the original six, and only good players got on those teams, so there was no pushover teams to get points with. Gretzky played in a time with better equipment and teams like that because of expansion. However, Gretzky also played in the WHL before and his numerous points there are not counted by the NHL. So if you are to choose a player by statictics then by all means he is not called, "The Great One", for no reason, but if you take into consideration equipment the players used, how many games they played, what position they were you simply can't choose just one. But if I had to answer it would be Gretzky and Howe, because to me if you look at when and how they played you realize that in each's time they are great are the best players ever. Lemeuix could have, but he was injured for years, although that is the reason he is not regarded as highly because health is an important factor in becoming a Legend. Orr by far is the best defenseman ever though, because he CHANGED by himself how the position is played. Roy is the best goalie, look in the record books, he only thing he was shaky at was stickhandling.

There is no clear definitive answer on this question (otherwise it would be a lame question) So, I would answer the question by rewriting it slightly.. If I had to choose one player from any era with which my team would be built around, who would it be.. arguements could be made for Gretzky, Richard, Orr, Roy, Sawchuk, even Lidstrom.. but if I had one player I would choose Gordie Howe.. They guy could skate, pound, score, pass.. he was perhaps the most complete player ever.. Gretzky was the most prolific scorer and was money on the power play.. many say Gretzky defined the game as it is today, and I agree completely.. but Howe was the combination of Gehrig and Ruth and Ty Cobb all wrapped into one player.. So that's my choice and it's by no means a slight to any other player that has been mentioned..

I agree with dolmann1. When you say golf everyone thinks right away Tiger Woods. To know that Gretzky dominated hockey more than Woods in golf says enough that the Great One was and I think will always be the best ever.
