First, a minor but significant point. "Anglican", "Presbyterian", etc. are NOT different "religions", but different branches of ONE religion, that is, Christianity.

So I take it, you are asking which was the main CHURCH (or "denomination") in colonial New York.

This is not as simple a question as for many other colonies. Almost all the New England [Congregationalists] and Southern colonies [Anglicans] had an official, established state church. But the Middle Colonies of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware did NOT. (Maryland, sometimes considered one of this group, did not have one at first, but eventually followed the southern colonies in making the Church of England [Anglican Church] the state church.)

For more on the distinctiveness of the Middle Colonies in this matter, see the article -"The Middle Colonies as the Birthplace of American Religious Pluralism"
It summarizes the picture thus: "Dutch Mennonites, French Huguenots, German Baptists, and Portuguese Jews joined larger communions of Dutch Reformed, Lutherans, Quakers, and Anglican", see:
http://www.nhc.rtp.nc.us/tserve/eighteen/ekeyinfo/midcol.htm

More specifically, Presbyterians and Quakers were the largest groups in New Jersey, the Dutch Reformed were important in early New York history.

Here is a nice chart of the various churches in the Middle Colonies:
http://www.nhc.rtp.nc.us/tserve/eighteen/ekeyinfo/midcoldenom.htm

For the OFFICIAL (established) religion of each colony, see the following chart:

I have a better question: with people like Samuel P, Angels Raising Hell, and Ann Coulter asking these kind of questions, how does any decent human being stand up and say they are proud to be in the same political party as these nut jobs????

Officially and in general the main religion was the Anglican church (the protestant church created by Henry VIII when he wanted to divorce his wife and the Catholic chiurch wouldn't let him).
