It depends on the type of worms. The horse does not gain weight no matter how much feed it eats, and if the worms are advanced the horse will lose weight. If it is a tape worm, at times one can actually see the worm half in and half out. Very disgusting - and poor horse!

The most obvious reason is how the horse looks. If you are properly feeding it and it begins to lose weight rather quickly and can't gain it back, that's a sure sign that your horse is suffering from worms.

Other symptoms include stamping of the rear feet, or trying to bite itself on the stomach, or any signs of discomfort are another sign. And then there's the obvious sign of seeing worms in the horse's manure.

Get a vet out there ASAP so they can deworm the horse.

Hi there;

Poor coat, listless, excessive tail rubbing (almost to the point that their tail looks like an old boars hair brush), colic, evidence of worms in the road apples ( this would be in a bad case), increase of appetite but no weight gain or even weight loss with no explanation.
Worming is part and parcel of horse ownership (like shoeing and yearly vet visits). If you have any question about internal parasites, simply take a fresh fecal sample to your vet and have them check it.

Symptoms of worms in horses are scratching their bottom against the fence or tree and messed up hair at the top of the tail. Dull coat, loss of apetite.

The most common symptom is they stamp their back feet just a short time after they start eating. Other symptoms follow that one.

bloated bellies...and i think they still eat, because they are trying to get back the nutrients they are losing from the worms...
