Spinach does not really explain why your forearms would be freakishly huge. Nor does just being strong... I mean, usually someone's biceps are what is bulked up in strong men... maybe the illustrator was just high on "spinach" or something... who knows...

They are actually tumors! And did you know that the reason he can't talk right and his eye is squinted is because of a stroke he had 6 years ago. The fact that he is alive is nothing short of a miracle.

Because he's a sailor that eats spinach. Back in the day it was important for kids to like their veggies. This cartoon was one way to encourage eating your spinach because it was not only good for you but built muscles too and made you really strong. :D ca ca ca ca ca (his laugh)
Also his muscles got big from all the heave-hoing he did on his ship and bench pressing Brutus.

He was a bosun, tying off ropes all day. Lots of forearm work. There are also stories that his eye problem was caused by nitrogen narcosis (the bends) from coming up too fast. Spinach has a big downside; it leaches calcium from bones.

Apparently, they showed off to people like Bruto and the likes so that nobody can mess with him. Back in the days, a man with big, giant forearms were considered men you would not want to mess with (I think Hulk Hogan was following that same suit as well) and so, Popeye always wanted to show off. That was the way he did it.
That and show off to Olive Oil. Which, I do not know why, not unless Popeye and Bruno wanted to sexually "rip" her a new one! LOL Not being graphic, so please don't report me, but, seriously..........never can understand Popeye, his forearms, his obsession with Olive Oil, Him!

It comes from spending SO MUCH time at sea... without any women around... and the only form of entertainment... or excercise... come on, do I have to spell it out for you...? Anyhow, THAT's why those specific forearm muscles are so overdeveloped...! (Oh! someone else already spelled it out. Oh, well.)

BTW, I just noticed your id name. Rishathra, eh...? You must be a Larry Niven fan, too!
