Welcome to hell my friend! I remember starting out in SEO and it's a very steep learning curve.

I've written a free guide to the absolute basics of SEO which you are free to download, it's a good start if you have no idea at all about SEO - http://www.adambunn.co.uk/seo-beginners.php

Besides that one of the best things you can do is follow certain blogs and newsletters. If you read enough, you will catch up. Eventually.

Here's a small start to a regular reading list. These sites are run by some of the best in the business. None of it will cost you anything but a healthy investment in time.

http://www.seobook.com/ (Aaron Wall)
http://www.seomoz.org/ (Rand Fishkin)
http://searchenginewatch.com/ (Danny Sullivan)
http://www.highrankings.com/forum/ (Jill Whalen)

Thats only a small start though, you need to read A LOT to keep up with the game - but they will lead you to other good places.

But be very wary of what you read about SEO. A lot of it is total rubbish. Try and validate everything you read by checking with multiple sources that can be trusted.

If you don't have enough time to do it yourself then don't kid yourself and end up doing a half hearted effort, because you'll waste your time and will probably end up making mistakes that will put your SEO progress back x amount of months. Most people don't have the time.

If you need to hire someone, realise that it *is* a highly specialised job and us SEO professionals are well within our rights to charge a premium for our services because they're extremely valuable.

As for trust, what I do is specify a 6 month action plan for my clients, that way you can see what you are getting before you pay anything. You need something like this, or you need to hire someone who has an amazing reputation online among the SEO community (eg, one of the above four people, if you're willing to spend like $500 per hour for consulting :-))

Video can not teach you to programme. You need to actually carry out programming to learn it.
