Very good question. It lasts anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks, but each person is different. A friend of mine lasted 3 weeks straight where I was nearly 5 weeks. Everyone is different but on the average 4 to 6 weeks.
For Timminsgirl: Breastfeeding helps shrink your abdomin faster which in turn helps you lose weight.

Well I'm sure it varies from person to person, but after the baby was born I was bleeding for 6 weeks. It did stop for a few days between there but started up again. I really don't consider this to be a period though. After the 6 weeks I had 1 week break with no blood and then had my actual period which lasted the normal amount of time for me and then every 28 days or so as normal.

I'm not sure what your question really is, are you talking about bleeding after you've given birth, how long with that last? That depends on the person, every woman is different. After the birth of my 1st, I bled for 9 days, after my 2nd child I bled for 3 weeks.
As for having a regular period after the birth of your baby it should be normal. Not lasting more than 7 days or so, a period is and always will be a period.

obviously this varies from person to person, but it also depends on your circumstances - i bled for nine weeks after i had my daughter, but i got the depo shot the day after she was born and that had a lot to do with it. i think the average is four to six weeks - anything after that, you should talk to your doctor.
