When I was much younger....I am soon to be 65......I was a very prolific reader. We lived so far out in the country they had to pipe in sunshine. We did not have TV in those days and more often than not the radio did not work. So we had to make our own entertainment and mine became reading.
To this day many of those books that I read remain my favorites. A few of them are: The Yearling; Where the Red Fern Grows; Old Yeller; Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn; The Chronicles of Narnina;
I suppose at this time of year when the leaves are turning and the air is getting cooler the woodsman in me comes out of hibernation and I still love to read Where The Red Fern Grows. It is a love story/tragedy/adventure genre all rolled into one. I have seen tough as nails ole country boys who seldom read and never show any emotion tune up and cry like a baby after reading this book. If Where the Red Fern grows won't move you nothing will.
I hope you find the above helpful. Perhaps you would like to share this list with your teachers and see what they think about them. I consider them classics but who knows what todays educators think.
Good luck

Anything by Terry Pratchett. He writes Kids books, Teen books and adult books that are really kids books but just with interesting covers. you will love them.
I can recomend, Truckers, Diggers, and Wings which were made into a tv series.
Or if you like fantasy/comedy witches and the like then start with, The Wee Free Men, A Hat full of Sky and his latest one the Wintersmith. which is the easy way into the Discworld novels. If you only read one of his books a year they would keep you going for the next 40 years easily and you would be laughing all the way.
I hope this helps
(i take no responsibility for you becoming a discworld junkie and never having your nose out of a book :) )

I really enjoyed Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. But I'm an adult, so I don't know if you would call this an adult book or not. When I was a teen, I read adult books, so I'm not familiar with any teen books.
Another book I really liked was Marley and Me, the story of a family who owns a very stubborn Lab.

I'm not yet 20 and started reading Harry Potter, and Christine Feehan books. I also started reading Greek mythology books and Shakepeare plays (use cliffnotes if you're not taking a class).
A good way to find books would be to go to Barnes and Noble or Half Price and just hang out for an hour in their Junior Lit section, you'll find some great stuff.

As a teen i used to read a lot of books about travel and advetures: in other countries, like "Tomek in Land of Kangaroo", in space, anything by Borthers Strugacky, on pirate ships, Jack London's books, "Captain Blood". This kind of stories make you wonder about the world and your posibilities out there. Try science fiction, too, it expands your imagination.
