my doctor gave me a heavy dose of bupleurum, a chinese herb, instead of robitussin. he said its ok 4 the baby because it's an herb. then i came home and called the ob doc and she said it's a risk because there's no research. i feel better, like magic pills..lol. but the babys all sweaty - just like i am. it's a side effect i guess. she seems a little extra irritable and sleepy. i'm kinda on the fence about these pills........any opinions?

Even thought it was my doctor who prescribed bupleurum to me, I still wanted a second opinion and asked my ob doctor about the herb. When she didn't know what it was, I called the lactation consultant. She hadn't heard of it either, but said she would research it and get back to me. I have yet to hear from her. I did my own research and found that this herb is prescribed to pregnant women to prevent nausia and jaundice in babies, and prescribed to babies and children. So me taking this while breastfeeding is actually GOOD for my baby. If anyone is interested in reading an article about this herb and the benefits it has to babies and children....

I would talk to a board-certified lactation consultant before taking more herbs. While they may be "natural," there is a risk to herbs, just like there are risks to drugs. There are certain herbs that should never be taken while breastfeeding. A board-certified lactation consultant may have some experience with herbs, or she may know of someone who is experienced in this field. Another good option would be to consult a lay midwife (LPM) about it.

till your toddler has shown some reaction to caffeine, you're superb to drink it collectively as breastfeeding. I drink 2-3 cups of coffee an afternoon. I additionally drink generic teas and organic teas. Drink what you like, there extremely isn't any reason to cut back your self.

I fully support the use of herbs, however, rember that they are drugs...just not in pill form, and anything you take into your body will find it's way to your breast milk

You should always talk to your DR or LLL before taking anything when you are bfing. What you take passes threw your milk. Better safe then sorry.
