The American Midwest is the agricultural breadbasket of the US and a small portion of the world. Ohio has the largest deposits of coal in the country and for a time was an early leading producer of petroleum. Minnesota has one of the largest deposits of Iron that I know of. The Great Lakes are the largest deposit of surface freshwater in the world. Lake Erie(bordered by Ohio and Michighan) is the "Walleye Capital of the World"(walleye is a type of fish). Iowa is the leading producer of maize(aka, corn). That is just to name a few examples.
