I changed the steering gear, hoses and pump on above auto. It "sticks" on slight left or right turn at high speeds. It seems as if the pumpisn't working and I hear a slight "howl. It goes away when I turn the wheel a little further (dangerous at 70 MPH). Is it the pump or the gear? I suspect the bypass valve on the pump. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx, Bill

Sounds to me like someone over-adjusted it, and every time you come up on the center crown of the pittman shaft, it binds.
Try to adjust it correctly.
1) Raise the car and PLACE IT ON STANDS!!
2) Loosen the lock-nut on the top of the gear.
3) With a 1/8" hex bit (or allen wrench) Back the stud out (counter-clockwise) at least 1 full turn.
4) Turn the wheel from stop to stop.
5) Center the wheel and turn the adjusting stud clockwise until you feel a SLIGHT resistance.
6) Secure the lock-nut.
7) Start the car and turn the wheel from stop to stop. If you can still feel a "hard" spot near the center of travel, then back it up a bit more.
While you are there, check the rag joint very well to see that it is secure, as well as all of the steering linkage.

Good Luck
