multiply the distance along the bottom edge parallel to the peak in feet by the distance of one side, (heel to peak) and multiply by 2. this should give you a good idea even estimating.. and you can return over estimated shingles that are still unopened. Also most shingles are either 3 bundles to a 100sq. or 4 if they are thicker dimensional shingles.

what kind of roof do you have? What is the pitch of your roof? do you have dormers or is it a straight rectangle? How big are your overhangs? You don't give enough info to provide an accurate answer.
