Islam and Christianity are very interesting in Africa. Islam came first through trade. as people converted, it became intermixed with Africa's traditions (of religion specifically). the same thing happened with Christianity. when Christianity spread, African versions of Christianity became created. they would take old traditions and mix them with the new found religion even though the two don't make much sense together, nor does Christianity condone the common African belief in practicing witchcraft or polytheistic beliefs. these variations of Islam and Christianity still exist today.
well, differences simply stated are:
Islam believes the Koran was given to Muhammad vs. Christianity believing in the Bible, which came from many people over many years.
Islam was more widely and permanently accepted in Africa and Spain specifically. Spain also accepted Christianity/Catholicism and has kept those traditions as well. Mostly, European countries accept Christianity much more freely.
as for deeper details on that, i am not completely sure! sorry.

Both were aggressive as they spread. Both made converts by force of arms. Both established hierarchies of leadership, but the Islamic leadership was much more diffuse while in the West Christianity was a religious version of an absolute monarchy.
