Ok, its goofy but it works, take a warm bath, drink a cup of cammomile tea with a little milk and sugar then put on comfy pj's (or whatever you sleep in) snuggle up in bed in a cool dark room and starting with your toes without moving anything say good night to all of your body parts (in your head, not out loud) you should start to feel a sleepy type tingle starting with your legs and working its way up as you do this. I have major trouble with insomnia and this has worked for me for years. Good luck!

First of all, falling asleep should be something gentle--not something forced. It's like when you tell the little kids, "Close your eyes", and they squinch them up tightly. No one can fall asleep through force.

I used to have trouble falling asleep because I used to get the 'thinks'--like if such and such happens what will I do?, how am I going to fit everything that needs doing into 24 hours, etc. One train of thought would lead to another until I was wide awake. The way to avoid this is to stop that train of thought from forming. Just find a newsradio station that gives short bits of news one at a time and put it on the sleep setting to turn off in half an hour. Even though news nowadays is seldom a ray of sunshine, the news bits come so quickly that even if you listen to them, they're on to the next one before you have a chance to think. In a short while, all you'll hear is the background voice of the newscaster and you'll drift off into sleep.

Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.

The only way you can force yourself is with products like Ambien... aka Sleeping Pills.

Other than that, you can try staying up all night, then go to sleep the next day at a certain time, say... 10pm, then set a really loud alarm to 6 or 7, depending on when you need to get up, and repeat this every day.

To be honest...there is no way to force yourself to sleep. I suffer from chronic pain and I lie awake tring to get sleep. I have found if you just try and relax and let sleep come to you naturally you will fall asleep.
Try this.....Before bed make sure you have completed everything you needed to do for the day. Do not lie awake thinking about what you did not get done. Lie completely still and relax your whole body...feel your arms go limp anfd even tell yourself your rms are going limp and focus on each part of your body as it relaxes and you may surprise yourself and fall asleep. Usually when we can't get to sleep it is because we have something on our minds. Try and resolve whatever is weighing you down so you do not take baggage to bed with with you. happy dreams :)

We all have different sleep patterns. Our circadian rhythms are all a little bit different. For example, my mother can lay down and fall asleep in 30 seconds, while I could lay in bed 2 hours before falling asleep.

The majority of the population cannot "force" themselves to fall asleep, but they can help the process. Warm milk works for some, a hot bath for others, etc. I'm sure you can find all sorts of remedies on the Internet.

My suggestion would be, try meditation. So many people try meditating before bed only to fall asleep in the process.

The "Golden Ball" meditation is probably one of the most relaxing and naturally makes you want to fall asleep.

Basically, you lay flat on your back in bed and stay still. Close your eyes and envision a warm, glowing golden ball form before you. This ball then surrounds your feet, and all your foot muscles relax. It very slowly makes it's way up your ankles, calves, knees, relaxing every muscle as it makes it's journey up your body. Feel the warmth and relaxation. It continues to move up your thighs, hips, stomach... relaxing you to your very core. The golden ball continues upward to relax your arms, chest, shoulders, neck, face, and scalp. When it's job is done, the golden ball disappears, along with all the tension and stress.

Good luck!

You can't force your body to fall asleep however, there are some things you can do to aid your body. Try reading in bed or listen to a "sounds" cd. I sleep great when it is raining outside so my husband bought a cd with the sound of rain on it. When I can't sleep I turn it on and it works. Or have wild crazy sex before you go to bed...this should make you tired!

When I can't fall asleep, I lie in bed on my back, point my feet straight up and wiggle all my toes as fast as I can for 30 seconds..puts me to sleep every time. I read the tip in a magazine once. REALLY WORKS!!

Practice relaxing your body one part at a time. Begin with your toes, and slowly work up to your head. All the while begin to pay attention to your breathing. You will probably notice as you slowly relax that your breathing becomes deeper and more regular. If that doesn't work....try reading a very boring book.
