The name Elk is a little confusing, since it depends on whether you live in Europe or North America, or Asia.

Origin:
The name Elk originates with Alces alces, the largest extant deer species, which is what is typically called a Moose in North America.

Elk by Region:
Therefore, to Europeans an Elk = Moose

However, most North Americans attribute the name "Elk" to the red deer. A much smaller animal than the moose, which still tends to be larger than the traditional deer.

Just to be confusing, Elk is used in India to refer to Cervus unicolor, commonly known as the sambar.
