there are race tracks you can put your car in that are legal. Speed limits are constantly adjusted, recently in west texas the highway speed limit has been moved up to eighty. Most importantly, it lets you see how fast you are going if the moment has ever hit you. (when i was sixteen I went through my invincible stage with a v-6 mustang- 118 mph)

The speed indication of an analog speedometer works on the magnetic principle. It includes a revolving permanent magnet driven by the cable connected to the transmission. The magnet sets up a rotating magnetic field which exerts a pull on the speed cup, making it revolve in the same direction. The movement of the speed cup is slowed and held steady by a hairspring attached to the spindle of the speed cup. The speed cup comes to rest where the magnetic drag is just balanced by the retarding force created by the hairspring.
So, the needle shows beyond the actual car's speed when the connection of hairspring and spindle is gone.

Because who is to say you'll never move to Germany and take the car with you? (There's no speed limit on the autobahn in some sections of Germany).
Besides that, for a time (no longer mind you, but for a time) there was no speed limit in Minnesota - and with that kind of limit, how annoyed would you be that your car was locked into 65 MPH?
Who knows - if Minnesota did it once, they or another state could do it again, so they won't lock you out of higher speeds. (Now they do electronically control some high-end sports cars to max out at 150 or so....)

Because it looks cool, mostly. Though I have had a few cars that would bury the needle, especially when all cars had an 85 MPH speedo on them. I doubt that I'll ever get my Ford Fusion up to it's 140 MPH speedo limit, and wouldn't want to try anyway.

Because the car companies realize that the car will sell better if potential customers can imagine themselves driving it that fast. Even if they only sit in their driveway and say VROOM VROOM to themselves, customers love the thrill of imagining they can drive fast so why not humor them by putting impossible speeds on the speedometer?

nicely one reason is that distinctive states have distinctive limits and distinctive international locations have distinctive limits (velocity limits in Europe are greater). certainly it extremely is extremely of a susceptible reason however. the authentic reason is promotion. automobiles symbolize freedom, adventure, break out from the mundane. So the swifter and the greater efficient your product is, the greater you will sell against your opposition. of direction it extremely is all day dreaming simply by fact certainly all of us sit down in site visitors going nowhere quickly. nonetheless the attraction of "I quite have the quickest toy" sells ok. further all engines are degree by skill of two actual dimensions, torque and horsepower. Torque is what supplies reliable acceleration and permits you to hold numerous shipment. Horsepower is what pushes the motor vehicle at velocity against the air resistance. as a fashion to get adequate torque to pass a sedan able to wearing 5 adults and bags, you finally end up with adequate power to additionally pass critically swifter than any velocity cut back interior the U. S. or Europe, the place perfect. of direction the technologies exist to cut back the cost of the motor vehicle. case in point my spouse's automobile is constrained to 125Mph, it extremely is, the pc that runs the engine will computer screen your velocity and decrease the gas to the engine in case you bypass previous a predefined velocity. So in concept we could have automobiles that for the duration of no way exceed the cost limits yet we are decrease back to promotion, human beings desire to be on top of issues and that they won't spend tens of 1000's of dollar for a motor vehicle they do no longer administration. I did no say human beings are sensible =)
