Any particularly good or bad brands? Thanks for any help!

I have had great luck with my Kenmore from Sears. It works well and has lasted a long time. For $500 you can get a really sophisticated machine that does embroidery, etc. A regular machine that does patterned stitches, buttonholes, zippers, etc. would be about half that ... and less if you watch for sales.

Walmart has sewing machines under $500.

I have a $200 (CAD$) Kenmore that I got from Sears and I love it. I pretty much only use it for quilting, though.

Sears has some at very reasonable prices. Also check www.hsn.com
