Subtracting a number from a negative
number is like starting below zero on a thermometer and removing more
heat. It sounds wierd but if the temperature is -13, not only is it
cold, but it is BELOW ZERO. If we remove 6 more degrees of heat, it
gets colder and the mercury moves down the scale 6 more degrees to
-19. Make sense?
The other part of your question is trickier. Subtracting a NEGATIVE
number is like REMOVING a debt. Let's think in terms of money. If I
owe you 5 dollars, it could be written as -5 in my book, to remind me
that I must remove 5 dollars from my account. But if you say "Oh
forget it. You don't owe me any more.", then I need to subtract the
debt from my books.

It's like saying -(-5), which to ME is like adding the money back into
my account. What we say is that subtracting a negative is JUST LIKE
adding a positive. So let's get specific.
If I SUBTRACT -5 from 12, I can write it as 12-(-5) which is JUST LIKE
12+5 which is 17.

One easy way (when the larger number is positive) is to put the negative number under the positive number so it is easier to see the problem: +89 (I can't seem to make 89 sit above 67)
-67 Now you can the see answer is:
22
When both numbers are negative, just add them and assign a negative value. -78 plus -50 = -128.
If the negative number is larger than the positive number: -89 +67, the answer is the difference between the two. Since 89 is larger than 67, your answer will have a negative sign: -22

Adding a negative number is the same as subtracting a positive number.

In the first case, the signs are different so you subtract the smaller number from the larger and use the sign of the larger number.

89 - 67 = 22

You can re-write the second problem as -78 + - 50 so you add the numbers together and since the sign is the same you use it.

-78 + -50 = -128

-78-50= -128

if you still don't understand look examples up on the Internet and see if you can figure it out or just stay after school one day and have your math teacher help you it might be easy er to learn by yourself instead of with the whole class sometimes it can be hard to pay attention

Subtraction is just a word.

-67 + 89 = +22
-78 (+) -50 = -128

always add pluses.
always add minuses.
always subtract mixed signs.

your answer could be a minus.

Example

-98 (add to ) +24 = answer is -74

-67 + 89 = 22

this is like you owe someone 67 dollars. now you have 89 dollars. you return the 67 dollars and you have 22 dollars left.

-78 - 50 = -128

you owe john 78 dollars and you owe tom 50 dollars. you totally owe both of them 128 dollars.

the first one is 22 because if you switch the numbers it is 89-67, the same thing.

the second is negative 128 because a negative minus a negative is a negative. The easy way to do it is add the numbers together and put a negative sign up front.
