it represents armor because Hester did commit adultery which you already know but it is her armor from society which is judgmental. by wearing the scarlet "a" she is letting people know that she is an adulterer instead of letting people judge her and guess what life she leads. it is her shield from negativities in Boston. when she is in the gov.'s mansion, the armor in the hallway is a symbol of Hester and also where it shows the true armor: that she is still able to go about life and she is valiant even under the circumstances

Unless you are reading it like she wore the "A" as a badge of armor. Which is a metaphor of she wore it proudly with honor.
