The officially stated reason for the war in Iraq starting was that Iraq had WMDs. We now know that was untrue.
The real reasons for the war starting are many, and include:
- a desire to control Iraq's oil and keep it off the market so that the price of a barrel of oil could be raised from $5 to, at one time $75

- a need to keep America's war nusinesses in profit, a permanent need for war.

- a need to protect the dollar by stopping Sadam Hussein from dealing his oil in the oil-for-food sanctions in Euros.

- a part of a long term mplan to control all Middle Eastern oil fields. Whoever controls the oil controls the world.

The escalation has been caused by a total miscalculation on the amount of resistance that would be received. and the refusal to admit a mistake. It seems logical to me that if any country is attacked by an outside force, and their leader and government removed, then they will fight to the last man using any means possible to avoid being taken over by a foreign power.

It started with the Iraq invasion of Kawait. The cease fire after Desert Storm was conditional on certain actions by the Iraq government; disclosure of WMD, disarming long range missiles, etc. Iraq refused to comply with UN mandates. After 17 resolutions demanding Iraq comply, the US started looking to enforce them. Several nations were opposed, most notably France and Russia. The US gathered a coalition of several other nations (UK, Poland, Spain, several Eastern European nations) and resumed hostilities. This time, the fighting would not stop until Iraq was completely subdued and the government disposed. Many in the Islamic community saw this as an invasion of Muslim lands by Crusaders and thus Iran, Syria, and several other nations started allowing terrorists and foreign fighters to use their territory to get into Iraq and continue fighting. Al-Queda was especally active in recruiting fighters and sendign them in.
