I have a 2003 BMW 325i sedan. It is time for the brakes to be replaced. Do I need to take it to the nearest BMW dealer to have them replaced or will any brand of brakes work?

You can have them replaced by someone else, with a decent brand of brake pad! It will be cheaper, and usually the agents use the same brand that can be bought from any spares shop, but it just has the BMW logo on the pads. But don't go for the cheapest brand, it is not worth it in the long run!

I used to work at a Mazda dealership. Some aftermarket brakes are good, some junk. Factory brakes are designed specifically for your car. Aftermarket might squeak or grind until warm. They should stop OK but noise will drive you nuts. Ask other BMW owners where they have good luck locally.
