The best neighborhoods are Ahwatuke (ah-wa-to-key), Scottsdale (but not south scottsdale), Paradise Valley, Tempe (south Tempe is your best bet), and the west side of Chandler.
I've been here 13 years and that's my opinion. Stay away from South Phoenix, new but still scary, the entire west side and anywhere north will be too far away.
if I can be of any assistance let me know (I am not a realtor).

Tempe is the college area of town. Scottsdale is the ritzy area of town. Suprise/Sun City/Glendale are very family/suburbany, so maybe not what your looking for. The Southeast side of Chandler and Gilbert are nice. Mesa is an old area and pretty much run by the LDS. There are not too many areas you can go wrong, I'd just stay away from the south side of Phoenix.

If you are looking for a college town, Tempe would be a good option. South Scottsdale (old town) is also a good option, both are super close to the airport, and they both have pretty affordable housing options. The safety of the area is pretty good in both, tempe I am sure a bit better since you have college students there, you have a lot of cops.

Your best bet is Tempe. It's got the food, the festivals, the Lake. It's central to all other cities: Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler and Mesa are all it's neighbors.

Scottsdale is BEAUTIFUL. Really ritzy though, and I'm not quite sure how far of a drive it is. Also, I've heard great things about Tempe. While living in Arizona, you HAVE to visit Sedona. Its the most beautiful place I have ever been to.

Tempe, Mesa, or Chandler, the suburb's of Phoenix..Living in Phoenix is so to busy, to much
smog and the smaller suberbs are the best..

Tempe and/or Scottsdale. Both are very nice, but they might be too close to the airport for your tastes.

I love Glendale! I've lived here most of my life on the westside. I highly recommend it.
