Birds follows steps to build their nests: Selection of building site comes first followed by collection of materials then the building process. For ground nesting species it is simply done just by picking it up. For tree nesting species, it involves interweaving the individual items until to form a matrix and some material is sown together in some birds.

Birds got many ways to build their nests with few examples as described:

Weaverbirds build a communal, weatherproof roof before building individual nest chambers under its protection. The most able of all nest builders, weaverbirds use threads stripped from large leaves to weave their circular or conical basket nests. The birds may use more than a dozen different kinds of knot. The completed weaver nest look like fruit hanging from the tree.

Tailorbirds of Southeast Asia sew leaves together to build a funnel-shaped nest with the use of their sharp bills like needles piercing holes along the edges of large green leaves and threading plant fibers through the holes and knot them so the stitches won't fall apart.

The Edible-nest Swiftlet of Southeast Asia makes its nest entirely out of hardened saliva. The saliva looks like spaghetti when fresh, but hardens when exposed to the air.
