Because no one has tried to pass laws yet

2006-10-02 13:26:10 · answer #1 · answered by aliciarox 5 · 0 0

I think the question should be, why would it illegal to murder, torture, and slaughter pigs, cattle, and chickens for food.

Political entities make laws based on the ethics, morals, and needs of the people making the laws, and the people under the jurisdiction.

In more democratically oriented states, that means the laws are based on the morals and values of the people as a whole.

Before there would be laws against killing animals for food, you would have to have a country where many (and maybe most) people believed that killing animals for food was not a good idea and should be prohibited by law. I don't think this has happened anywhere yet, but it might some day somewhere.

"murder" is defined as the killing of one human being by another -- so it's impossible to "murder" an animal.
Slaughter, yes -- that's not necessarily a negative term.
And torture...torture implies that the living thing being tortured understands that the torturer is inflicting pain as the means to an end -- intentionally, for enjoyment; to force a confession or extract information; etc. So I don't think it's possible to torture animals, either -- except for perhaps chimps, they don't understand what is going on even if they do feel pain.

Now -- why is it ok to kill and eat animals? Because we're carnivores. We always have been carnivores, and unless evolution makes some big changes, we always will be. Our bodies are able to use animal proteins more efficiently than any other food source. Animal protein is good for us, it keeps us strong, and it's a reliable and compact energy source. Not to mention tasty. If you want to choose not to eat meat, fine -- be my guest. But don't misuse words or imply that raising and killing animals for food is torture or murder -- by the definitions of those words, it's not. Unkind to animals? Yeah, sure. But not murder or torture. It's also completely natural -- your ancestors were killing and eating animals hundreds of thousands of years ago.

Amen. I'm a vegetarian, and I believe it's totally barbaric. I love animals so much that it hurts, and I do all I can to stop animal torture.

As for your question; I guess the only possible answer I can conjure is that people need food. I don't agree with it in any way, but people need to eat.

Justin:

Murder is a defined term under the law. It means the killing of a human with malice aforethought. Non-humans are not covered by such laws and hence their killing cannot be "murder." There are laws in every state that make it a crime to kill or torture non-human animals withouth a license (i.e., a hunting license, a vet license, etc.) Those laws are the equivalent of "murder" laws for non-human animals.

Now I venture to guess that you are speaking more of killing animals for sport or for food and not the person who decides to shoot his neighbor's cat for the fun of it. Well,Justin, sport hunting is not illegal and neither is killing a cow to make a steak. It never will be illegal. People have been killing animals for food for thousands of years. If you want to change this, write to your state legislator and ask him or her to propose a law.

Good luck.

Hi. I am not sure where you are going with your question, but as a vegetarian I just wanted to say that I hope all people will realize that we do not have to kill animals any more in order to eat well and be happy. In fact, more people in the world could eat more food if we all gave up our addiction to flesh.

When i first saw your question my thoughts were that killing for food is natural and justifiable. Then I went to the site and watched some of the video.
I am appalled at the savagery that I saw there, and thoroughly disgusted with mankind for allowing this to go on.

Look, if God didn't want us to eat meat, he wouldn't have made it taste so good! But seriously, these animals are raised to be killed and eaten.... We've been hunting meat for ages! Let's not forget that many animals hunt and eat meat themselves! Even out teeth are made to eat meat....must mean that we need meat!
