The qualities of a great criminal defense attorney (or, for that matter, a great civil attorney) include:

1. Being able to pick a good jury.
2. Being able to tell a good story.
3. Understanding the rules of evidence and the constitutiona protections afforded suspects.
4. Being sufficiently personable that there isn't obvious friction between the attorney and the rest of the people in the court.

The difference between a good criminal defense attorney and a bad one is a conviction, when there's any room to show reasonable doubt.

A great criminal defense attorney is one who has no conscience and does not mind putting a criminal back on the street.

Of course a lawyer can get you out of trouble, and the more they cost usually the better they are, look at the severity of their cases and how many they won.
