If a poll has been taken on the average number of houseplants per home, I'm not aware of it. I have a lot of houseplants because I love them, they really contribute great decor to any room. I always include plants in my decorating schemes. You can make a room look tropical or any other look you like. They also help to clean the air in the house, some more than others. It is a very low cost way to make your house look good so have as many as you like. Be sure to have your pots in waterproof holders so you don't ruin your carpet or flooring.

I have about ten in each room, according to their light requirements. They are also rotated 1/4" every few days so they will grow evenly. In the winter, I use my entire downstairs to put about 100 plants to 'sleep', and then bring them out when there is no danger of frost. All in all, my average house plants would be about 80-100, and yes it takes lots of time to water, feed and take care of them, but I am rewarded handsomely.

as many as you want and can take care of is a good number ok umm average well let me see i have 3 my boss has none my friends cass and joe have none so i think that averages out to 1 :-)
just go with as many as you like and make sure to check the light,heat, and humity requirements of the plants before you get them or else they tend to die. i like jade plants they can be trimed to any shape, are very forgiving if i forget to water them, also they are very easy to propagate, they are suppose to bring good luck, and make great gifts too :-)
