Can anything be done to increase the amount of vacation we get per year? I'm not a slacker but it would be nice to spend more time with the family...

Really, most companies start you at two weeks paid vacation (10 days) PLUS you get about 10 holidays or so a year - President's Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, etc, so you really get about 20 workdays off (10 vacation + 10 holiday) which is 4 weeks all totalled.

Plus you accrue more vacation time the longer you stay with a company, so two weeks vacation only really applies to new employees.

That's no longer true for many companies. When I was working I got 25 days of PTO (paid time off). My husband gets about the same. The longer you work for a company the more "vacation" you get.

If you want more vacation, work in health care - when I worked health care, I got 6 weeks my first year!

Oh, but the base pay stinks -

You can always take unpaid vacations if your employer lets you.

What's a vacation? I haven't seen one in years.

Join the military. We get 30 paid days of vacation a year. We also don't really get sick days so I guess it evens out.

You tell them you're sick, they tell you to go run 2 miles and sweat it out. =)
