uggh i hate earth science

Temperature profile. In the lowest layer the troposphere temps decrease with height as the heating influence of the surface is lost. The next layer, the stratosphere, temps increase with height as ozone at the top of the layer heats up as it absorbs UV radiation. The third layer, the mesosphere, again decreases with height, moving away from the concentration of ozone. The final layer, aka the thermosphere has increasing temps with height, solar radiation heats the very top of the atmosphere.

I can't remember exactly. I think the different zones have different chemicals in the air, or something like that. Maybe they have more ozone, or less oxygen, or light bounces through them differently.

Or maybe when you go into space, there are signs marking each layer, like when you cross state lines. Hey, you've never been to space! You don't know there aren't lines up there in the atmosphere!

the atmosphere is not homogeneous. it has different temperatures at different altitudes and different components like ozone...
