Holy Cow!!! Reading through those "answers" make me realize how stupid some people are.
Actually though a few of the answers were right. Most chain saws are similar if not the same, but there is just about always variation from model to model. On a gas chainsaw you have the motor, centrifugal clutch, bar, tension screw and bolts, and on a few even a brake. The brake is usually in the form of a safety shroud just in front of the top handle.
As most answers said, don't do this while it is running. but that's just common sense and my 8 yo brother knows that. on whichever side the bar is on (the right side I believe) there should be two nuts. remove those two nuts and the bar should become loose. These bolts may hold on the side housing of the saw and therefore this side will come off too. Slide the bar toward the motor. It should move an inch or two. the chain will now slide off the sprocket on the clutch. I assume your after the motor and bar so just put the saw back together without the chain. there should be a tension screw either on the bar or on the housing, but don't worry about that since you don't have a chain to tighten.
It's really not that hard to do and you shouldn't end up with too many loose pieces. Good luck with your costume.

read the manual and if you havent got one why not. Anyway up near the housing, thats the motor part where the chain goes around the motor cog there's a cover, take that off and you will find an ajustment srew or nut, loosen that and the chain will come off. NOW when putting the chain back on make sure you adjust the tension nut,BUT not too tight just enough to leave it a little loose but not so much that it can come of its housing. Read the other answers, some you may be able to use as halloween jokes. lol

you have to use this little tool you get with the chainsaw, to take off the covering, then losen up the part that keeps it tight, and take it off... i wouldnt suggest using that as part of your costume though because its REALLY sharp and the chain is stiff, not like a normal chain.. so its hard to shape. hope that helped.. sorry i can't be more descriptive. try going to home depot or lowes, they might be able to help you out.

There's actualy 2 different ways. 1- there will be a screw somewhere on the body that will controll the tention. You can losen that screw and remove it from the side
2- Use a flathead screw driver to pop off one of the links on the chain. I've seen this done but never done it myself so can't give any more details.

First try searching on the internet for instructions for your spacific brand/model. They should tell you how to safely take it off.

If you are fortunate enough to have the owners manual you will see that there is a screw you can usually tighten or loosen that will allow the sprocket at one end to move enough to take off the chain. Be very careful, the flacks can cut.

Most cutter bars have bolts you loosen to relax tension on the chain. Then you probably have to remove the safety cover to get the chain off the motor gear/sprocket.

Very carefully!

Really, loosen than chain tension. Once that is done you should have enough space in the chain to remove it from the gear and bar.

You have to get an allen wrench and loosen the chain and it will come off but don't forget to take the side cover off.

There is a nut that you have to turn to loosen the chain, then just take it off. You will need a wrench and a screw driver.
