maybe you mean repressing or something ?

I don't think the human brain ever forgets anything. Data is just stored away especially the useless facts of every day mundane life - otherwise one could get crazy.......but damn where is my car key when you need to remember ??-)...We would be overwhelmed by the amount of info and trivia if we could remember everything.

Of course people also try to forget some facts, moments, people.....but do we ?? Not really. Those thoughts, feelings, good and bad memories might be kept away on purpose for a special reason but have a tendency to come up unexpectedly in some other forms.

You have an argument with someone.....you try to forget it and let it go......next thing you take it on somebody else.....

Or vice versa : you try to forget for your own sake a good memory.....but you stumble upon something which ignites that data which you think (I mean people in general here !) you had kept well under lock.

The brain is complex. Nobody conciously remembers everything but hypnosis is a good tool sometimes ( well.......there has been some controversy about it in the media....false memory recall.....especially among victims of abusers). Under hypnosis a client will reveal long time ago events.

From infancy onwards, the human brain remembers : the first contact with an other human being......the earlier childhood experiences. One might try to forget and use reason and evolve to some more elaborate way of thinking and philosophing (is that a word ??). Some people are good at it. Extraordinarily good and have overcome the most terrifying and horrible experiences ( read from books......biographies) and some......are not so good.

People are all different.

Memory is a complex thing....one word, a sniff of a scent, a song could bring back a whole lot of events and emotions which one thought had forgotten - successfully - a long time ago.

Of course.....the other side is "retrieval".....what you are trying to remember and hold in your mind and escapes you for some reason !! Think of students who cram for their exams..as an example.

The bad side of one trying to forget about something is that it tends to creep up without our knowledge.....you think you forgot that bad interview last week ?? Why do people break down in pimples ?? the body also stores away memories.

There has been a lot of documentation about this. The connection between mind and body. I once read - don't know whether that is true ! - that being "heartbroken" actually does affect the physical heart in some way......Some people say that memory is also actually stored in the human body.

When some people exhibit symptoms like asthma in adulthood..: what is that they could not say ???

Respiratory problems : what is the problem with communication skills ??

Some people (experts) might go too far and say : you need glasses because you can't see the whole picture in your life....

etc..

Vast subject.....

And then we can come up with "forget and forgive"....

Do we really ?? Are some people more evolved spiritually that they actually can forget for real ??

Some people seem to remember only negative factors....others prefer to remember positive ones and brush off "the bad elements"...."looking through life via rose glasses ?". A question of balance is needed then maybe.......Think at new couples...only see the "good things" up to the point of ideolising them and conveniently bypass the little annoying traits.....that is human nature after all ! We all go through this stage !

We never forget anything......only time, experience, hindsight, reasoning, understanding make us understand more after a while but forget?

There is short term and long term memory too.....Many people when they reach a certain age lose their short term memory but can vividly recall past events some 60 years ago or more.....! Maybe one of the reason some are told " you are always living in the past ??"".. Alzheimers' disease comes up to my mind : what a terrible affliction.

People do not ever forget.......sometimes...in some way...a connection via multiple bypasses -whether it be via a book, a movie , a song etc - will reconnect them with long ago memories.

Good thing about forgetting is : I could not tell you minute after minute what I did today or even this evening !!!:-)

What really great about it,is that you don't waist time holding a grudge. Every time you meet someone it's like the first time. And the times you do remember, but say you're running late for an appointment, Everyone thinks it's because you forget things.

I not often take into account the matters I have forgotten! So I have a tendency to take into account and, if I put out of your mind, then it's infrequent that it issues. I do try to use a diary for the matters I must take into account to not put out of your mind... A determine, probably ninety five% take into account and five% put out of your mind, in a average week.

You're constantly learning something knew - whether you learned it already or not. You never remember anything that is upsetting. Always making new friends. You are never disappointed because you can't remember what you expected.
