alumni:

Noun
Inflected forms: pl.a·lum·ni A male graduate or former student of a school, college, or university.
Etymology
Latin, pupil, from alere, to nourish; see al-2 in Indo-European roots.
Usage Note
Alumnus and alumna both come from Latin and preserve Latin plurals. Alumnus is a masculine noun whose plural is alumni, and alumna is a feminine noun whose plural is alumnae. Coeducational institutions usually use alumni for graduates of both sexes. But those who object to masculine forms in such cases may prefer the phrase alumni and alumnae or the form alumnae/i, which is the choice of many women's colleges that have begun to admit men.

currently for most schools you can be an alumni if you took a class there and pay fees to the alumni association. actually i guess that is being a member of the alumni association which is actually different than being an actual alumni.

It's the plural of alumnus - or student. The alumni of a school are the former students of a school - those who actually graduated, I mean. They are always getting hit up to make donations to the school or come to events even after they graduate. It's pronounced "uh-lum-nigh" - so hope this helps.
