My son's never seems to work. He is questioning getting another or even a different brand. Right now he's using a CD player. Suggestions for an improvement? Christmas isn't that far away.

Except for some minor software (iTunes) and firmware (functionality of iPODs) updates, the new models have made two improvements: brighter screen and better battery life.

However, the hard drive based models are still subject to excessive shock since the storage medium is a hard drive with moving parts. The flash based NANOs have been rock-solid (within reason).

Of course, there are alternatives to iPODs that are less expensive than iPODS (check brands from Creative, SanDisk, Samsung, iRiver, etc.). Some even have user replaceable battery, FM receiver, bigger screens, and recording functions, unlike iPODs.

The new iPods aren't any interesting, they're basically good and cool, not interesting.
Try out IriverClix or ZenV (plus). Those are special. Both aren't very expensive. Read their reviews on reviews.cnet.com
