my brother turned seven in august.
i got him a gameboy advance. there are tons of games on the system, and judging by the fact that your son has a snes, he's not a stranger to video games (like my brother was)
of course, since it's a handheld unit with a screen, i had to set a ground rule. no touching the screen. and absolutly NO touching the gameboy without washing and drying his hands first.
the DS is good and all, but it's got the touch screen, and if your son gets frustrated, he might scratch too hard. that happened with my eight year old cousin.
-----------
if you'd rather do a console, the gamecube is decent, it's another nintendo product, and there are some ok games, especially for his targeted group.
i would not reccomend the N64. only a small % of the games were any good, and they aren't making any new games either
-----------
nintendo is also releasing the Wii soon, it's the next game system by nintendo

Whoa, he's still got Super Nintendo? Well, I love Super Nintendo. ^_^
ANYWAY, as to the question, don't get him any of the Xboxs, or Playstations. I think many of the games for those systems are inappropiate for a seven year old. I wouldn't get him an Nintendo 64 either, he needs to get with the times. If you're looking in getting him a handheld one, get a Nintendo DS. If console, get a Gamecube. Gamecube graphics are awesome, and the Nintendo DS (I wouldn't get DS Lite) allows you to play with other people (if you have Wi-fi connection). Or... this is a Christmas present right? The newest system, Wii, supposedly comes to the U.S. on November 10th. That console is going to change gaming history. Need more information on all of these systems? Check out my source links.
Hope I helped a teensy eensy bit.

This winter is kind of up in the air. Nintendo has a new system coming out, the Wii, and I don't know what sort of games it will have. A bit later on the PS3 will be out. Gamecube is a good system for kids but it will soon be outdated and I don't know when Nintendo will stop making new games for it. If you're willing to buy a handheld system I'd go with a Nintendo DS. Its easy to use and can play Gameboy Advanced games as well as DS titles.
