most of the 'local' stations are about 50 miles away. i bought an amplified indoor antenna, but i'd like to SEE the programs clearly, not just HEAR them. with the baseball playoffs coming up, i'm desperate for any good advice to improve reception. (satellite is not an option.) thanks in advance, i don't want to have to sit in a sports bar to see the twins win it all in 2006.

Amplified indoor antennas are ok if you are in the same city as the transmitting station. In your case, the only option which will perform in a satisfactory manner is an outdoor antenna. In nearly all circumstances an antenna that is bigger and higher will be better.
