okay, i totally saw a PBS special on arthur miller and it was great.
The Crucible's main plot is a criticism of the McCarthy HUAC fiasco. However, the subplot of infidelity reflects Miller's personal life where he was torn between the obligation he felt to his wife and the love that he felt towards another woman (Marilyn Monroe). The part that's not in the play at all - but is a juicy, weird twist - is that Monroe was sleeping with Elia Kazan (a film maker) and the two of them were in love with Miller (who wouldn't cheat on his wife) so after Monroe & Kazan would mess arround, they would spend the rest of the night talking about Miller.
