Where/when did groin-padding originate? It doesn't seem to be prevalent in modern ballet, but traditional ballet seems to go all-out. I can understand padding to hide what's REALLY there, but they sure seem to go overboard.

Actually most of them don't. It's just that they compress what they have, so it looks bigger.

Without getting too graphic, think what you see when you look at a man from behind with his legs spread. There are - um - things hanging down, aren't there? Well, that would look unattractive in tights, so male dancers wear a support which tucks them up front with the rest of their equipment. Assuming you're a guy, try it for yourself and see what kind of package you end up with.

Of all the questions I get asked about being a straight male in ballet, this makes me laugh the hardest. Why? Because if any male dancer was stuffing socks down his dancebelt he'd get laughed out of the changing room. Fact is some of the dancebelts we wear under our tights are padded. But only to the extent that it creates a rounded bulge, instead of identifiable parts. The girls I dance with don't really care.

No. They often have to supplement their income with an income from another job. Unless you join a large company or have a high rank, you will not make much. Very few make a decent amount to live without needing another source of income.
