The side that fires the first shot is generally considered to have started the war.

btw; the reason the South didn't attack Northern cities as often as Union forces attacked Southern cities, is because all three times they tried (1862, 1863, and 1864) they got their fannies handed to them on a silver platter.

However, during all of those invasions, Southern troops burned Northern cities, killed Northern civilians, and kidnapped hundreds of free black citizens, taking them back to the South to be sold into slavery.

It was called "blackbirding" and Lee permitted it.

Because the leaders of the south committed treason by attempting to dissolve the Union. They acted against the law and against the best interests of this nation. They were criminals, and were brought to justice.

But, NOW, if you'd like to build a fence of beer cans around yourselves and declare yourselves the Glorious Confederate Toilet Bowls...

...feel free.

It is overly simplistic to assume that either side "started the war." Both the north and the south did things to agitate each other. Many prior factors contributed to the civil war, not just firing on Ft. Sumter or even just secession.

It may have had something to do with that secession thing. Then firing on Fort Sumter sort of put peoples panties in a knot. A nation divided cannot stand.

Uh, if we're gonna get technical about it, you folks sorta did start the war when you seceded from the rest of the country.

Wrong there was a total of 550,000 killed, 350,000 of the Union and 200,000 of the south, conclusion the south were better shots.
