it depends what element, like gold is Au from its other complicated name, Oxygen and Sulfur is one: O and S respectively

some even have the same first letter, like carbon and calcium and copper. Carbon is just C, but calcium is Ca, and copper is Cu. another letter is added to divert confusion.

It depends. Some have 1, some have 2. For example Hydrogen is H, Helium is He to distinguish it from Hydrogen. The unnamed elements have 3, for example Uub, but most have 1 or 2.
