Having a GOOD teacher in these subjects is a big step in that direction. Most teachers suck at these subjects and pass that on to their students!
If they have a bad teacher, get a tutor that excels at these subjects and will convey the enthusiasm these subjects deserve.

Offer to do something fun like a cool demo or blow off a rocket... food is a great motivator too, especially for teens. Maybe some type of prize.

Other than that, it's basically self motivation and you can only do so much as a teacher. The student has to want it too. Making concepts easier and more interesting to understand also helps out a lot. Good Luck!

Find a way to make it connect with them. For example if He/she likes cars then for the next section in science class relate it somehow to cars. The key is to find the glitch that makes it fun, or relate to something they are interested in. As for math, thats a hard one. Hey, you could always let them know that once they are in college its only a few math and science classes and then after that you get to choose what you take. It may not be what you want to tell them, but it is EXACTALLY what any student who hates a class wants to hear; that they no longer will have to do it after a point. I know I was excited!

Incent the high schooler with something he/she has been wanting for a long time. I found that with my son, when a senior and making it by the skin of his teeth, giving him money if certain test scores were achieved etc ..going to class etc., worked well. Now I know some people will think this is ludicrous, but it works for me at my job!!! Give me a goal and set some money to achieve it and I'll do it every time!!!

Tell your son/daughter that if they don't work hard enough or don't try at school than it well affect what college they end up going or how much scholarship fund they well recive. Help your kids and try to find out what the problem is-sometimes it might be the teacher who teaches the class so talk to him/her.

good luck!

Why not try working the homework with that student???Maybe the student would like some time with you as well..It is something you both can do together......Maybe the student isn't sure of him/herself. Maybe he/she needs praise from you once you see that he/she can do the job............worth a try!

Tell him that does he want to end up working at McDonald's, with a beer gut, six children to raise, and a lazy spouse that wears curlers all day?

I guarantee he'll start getting good grades.
