Yes its legal so far anyway, the government seems to be draggin its heels on this matter! Your e mail can be found a great multitude of ways! Through e mails you have sent to others, through sites you have logged on to and given your addy etc! Do like I do! Create a primary e mail account and use it for close friends and family, dont open attachements unless you know what they are, create a secondary account such as yahoo mail, use this addy when you need an account to sign up for something online!

when you signup for stuff and they ask for your email address they sell it to demographics companies. these companies determine who can afford what and you are categorized that way. then these companies sell blocks of these email addresses to advertisers to spam you.

have you noticed that if your income is $30,000 a year that you never get ads for a Rolls Royce? that because of the demographices company knows you can't afford it.

some unsuspecting people put their email address on their web site. the problem with this is that advertisers send out robot programs that mine your email address off of your web site. then they spam you. there is a way to put it there so these bots can't read it.

It's not legal but it's very difficult to catch these people. The way they are doing it is likely through a spyware program. I recommend installing spybot (www.spybot.info) and Ad-Aware (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-1) and removing any spyware they find. That should cut down on more people getting your info.

When you give out your email address some/most sites will sell it to others then they send offers, junk, etc.

Spammers can get your email address from sites you enter it on, such as www.freeze.com (screensavers). They can also collect this information from spyware installed on your computer.
