I recently purchased a house with a septic sytem. In the crawl space I found a air pump with a hose going into the ground. The air pump was plugged into a plug with the label aerator. The air pump has seized and no longer works. I wonder if it is worth replacing. The septic tank does seem to have an odor problem. I was wondering if certain septic systems requuire aeration. Other people I know with septic systems do not have aerators. Does anyone know about this.

The stink pipe through the roof of your house should provide ventilation to the septic tank and prevent siphon lock throughout the plumbing. If your septic tank didn't smell bad I'd be very surprised, but where are you to get the odor?

The septic field dispenses of the water partially through evaporation and partially through perculation.

I don't know of any part of a standard septic tank / field system which requires aeration. Perhaps your pump is meant for something else.

It depends if you have a normal drainage bed with weepers, or a sand filter or evaporation bed or some other non-traditional method for discharge.

If you do not have the specifications for the system, it would be a good idea to have a professional look at it. Otherwise, you could be discharging contaminated waste into your yard and beyond.

Yes you need to replace that pump!! it is used to churn the mess down there to keep it active and also to help the "stuff" flow to the next level in the tank!! it also helps propel the odors down the line!!
