The first milk that comes out is called foremilk, it is what the baby gets most of. Next comes what is called hindmilk. There is a chemical called tryptophan in that is higher in the hind milk that makes babies sleepy. It's the same chemical that is found in turkey, which is why everyone gets sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner.

My son would fall asleep as soon as he started to breast feed. Sucking is a soothing thing that babies do. Like a pacifier, you stick one in their mouths and they are as happy as can be.
While feeding, tickle the baby slightly or rub his cheek to keep him aware of what he is trying to do. It takes sometime but he will catch on.

Wouldn't you? Warm, sweet milk filled up your tummy. The most calming scent and sound you will ever know. Comforting arms holding you snug and secure.
When you smell, see, taste, hear, touch something that reminds you of your own mother, don't you feel a sense of comfort rush over you? Doesn't it take you back to simpler times when you were carefree and happy? Same idea.

I'm currently breastfeeding and my daughter also falls asleep sometimes... or at least becomes very relaxed , in addition to the tryptophan found in breast milk, I believe my daughter finds the cuddling and whole process safe and secure .which is why I've included it in our bedtime routine..my husband gives my daughter a bottle every now and then .he removes his shirt to allow the skin to skin contact..to help him bond with her..we found this site (babycenter.com )very helpful

Breast milk has something in it, a natural enzyme of sorts that makes babies sleepy. Like eating turkey, it tends to make people sleepy because of some enzyme the turkey has naturally.

Your baby is comforted and fells secure with mom. Your baby is also bonding with your wife. Have her pump some milk for you to feed your child so you may also bond this way and your baby will also feel comfort from you. Congratulations

Be thankful it puts him to sleep. Sucking is soothing to a baby. How old is your child?

very soothing for them! Try taking their clothes off, except the diaper, and get skin on skin contact, also tickle him to keep him awake. It will be better when he is older!

I do too, sometimes. Ha, ha. No, seriously, it is like when you get done eating, and you get tired and want to lay down and take a nap-same principle.

feeding soothes the baby which makes him sleep... it would be the same if you were bottle feeding.
