My absolute most favorite place to go with the coolest, most laid back folks is the Gaslight (or is that Gaslamp) in Santa Monica (on Wilshire, I think). The Saddleranch on the sunset strip... lots of young slaves of the entertainment industry tend to go there after work. For the true friends in low places experience you can try the Frolic Room in Hollywood. I've always thought coffee shops were better to meet folks in LA... Karma on Cahuenga or Josephs Flowers/Coffee on Wilcox in Hollywood were two of my favorites.

Try Backstage in Culver city. Right across the street from the Sony Studios lot.

Friday nights at Barnes and Noble.
Seriously I've met people who are smart and attractive hanging out at bookstores late at night.
Sure it's not a party but it's a fun change of atmosphere I think.

Go to someplace that doesn't sell alchohol. If you want to meet someone new, stop hanging around drunks and go to a McDonald's.
