I have an interview coming up, and it's not my dream job, but it's in a competitive field and I would be glad to have it.

If I lie and tell them what they want to hear: "My ultimate goal is to work here and do whatever this job demands of me" I look like a liar and a brown-noser with no spine, which is true.

If I tell them the truth: "My goal is to use this job to save up as much money as I can to reach my ultimate goal" then I appear uncommitted and unworthy of hiring, which is true.

But I still want to be hired because I need to pay bills and it's better than most jobs. What do I do?

This is one of thsoe fun questions that depends on who is interviewing you and what kind of company you are interviewing with.

First thing you should realize is that one reason they are asking this question is to see how well you know their company. If you really want to tell them what they want to hear, then you need to know the structure of their company. For example, if you are interviewing for a sales management position and you want to tell them that your ultimate goal is to be president of the company, tell them how you would accomplish such a thing. Would you streamline communications between departments? How would you keep both the bottom line and your employees happy? This takes a little research, so if you really want the job, you may want to invest the time.

Secondly, you also need to remember you are up against competition. How do you think other people interviewing for the job are answering this question? What would you do to be unique? For example, I once had a friend who was interviewing for a job. When asked why she wanted the job, she said because she had started talking to the cats. She didn't have any cats at the time. The interviewer laughed, and my friend ended up getting the job. If your interviewer looks like the kind of person who would appreciate a joke (and you have a decent wit), go for it. You might just impress them enough to get that second interview.

Finally, my advice is to be true to yourself. If they are looking for someone permanent, and you're only thinking about your next step after this, is this really a job you want to take? If you don't get the job, you shouldn't look at it as a failing on your part, but as an opportunity to get that job that you will really like. Never ever settle. And good luck!

Tell them what you have to, to help land the job, but don't sell them something that you can't live up to. Tell them that you are looking for a position that you can grow with the company. I am married to a military spouse, and I have to move and start new jobs every two to three years. If I was always 100% truthful, nobody would want to invest time into me, knowing that I would be leaving. I tell them what they need to hear, and let them know that I am shopping for a job that I can advance through the company, and better myself. Good luck.

Just tell them that you are interested interested in their business and would like to learn it....ask them if there are any chances for advancement. Smile a lot. Also educate yourself about the business and know who your boss and the CEO are. When did they start? The product or service they provide...etc...etc...

Tell the truth and say that you will be dedicated because you want to reach your other goal.
Truth is a rare thing which I don't think many people use so I think you should use it.
